Horse and drake XP gainThis is a featured page

Your pet gains 1 XP point every 3.5 seconds that you spend in combat using normal attacks. Normal attacks are the ones you automatically do when you attack a monster. Attacks that consume mana are considered "special" attacks and will not earn your pet any XP. So even if you do a lot of fighting but your pet still doesn't seem to be leveling up any, maybe you should check and make sure that you're actually using normal attacks. The fastest way to gain pet XP is through pet leveling.

Your pet will not gain XP if it is a 0 health, 0 hunger, is not equipped, or is out of range and "lost." Make sure to watch its health and hunger as you fight. As soon as the health hits 0 your pet will die and become sealed; as soon as the hunger hits 0 your pet will stop moving. If your pet is not equipped, you can equip it by opening your inventory, finding your pet's icon, and double-clicking it. If your pet is "lost" or has gotten left behind, you can either unequip and re-equip it, or summon it by using the Pet summon command. If you have checked all of the above possibilities and your pet is still not gaining XP, you may need to change monsters or monster types. Fighting blue-named monsters--monsters that are 6 or more levels below you--will not earn your pet XP.

Like your XP, the XP your pet needs to gain each new level continually increases. Fortunately, pet XP does not go up at as steep a rate as our characters' XP does. If you go through your levels fighting mostly with normal attacks, you will find that your pet levels up almost 3 times faster than you do! This is a good thing because higher level pets can learn more skills to help you--but remember that if the pet gets above your level it will start eating huge amounts. So be careful not to let that happen.

At the moment, the highest pet level is 60. This may or may not be increased in the future. Currently, there are very few level 40+ pets in the game, so there is no demand for the pet level cap to be raised.

Look at this chart for the amount of pet XP needed at each level. XP amounts were taken from this chart. Some numbers may be slightly off. If you see one that is wrong and want to correct it, go ahead and edit the page.

To check your pet's XP amount, equip the pet and then hit the hotkey D or ALT+D. That will open up the pet's status window for you. The XP number is listed under the pet's level, health, and hunger.

Here's a helpful equation for calculating the real time - in minutes or hours - it will take your pet to lvl so you can be AFK and secure in the knowledge that your pet is doing just fine (unless, of course, you get DCed):

(total exp needed to lvl)(3.5)/60 = number of minutes.
Divide by 60 a second time to get the time in hours.

Example:
Say you want to train your pony from lvl 2 to lvl 3. The formula for the time it would take to lvl would be as follows:
(712)(3.5)/60 = 41.5 minutes

Similarly, if you wanted to train your drake from lvl 28 to 29, the equation would be as follows:
(6700)(3.5)/60 = 390.8 minutes; 390.8min/60 = 6.51 hours

This formula, coupled with the XP chart above and the Useful Numbers displayed below, will help you calculate how often you need to check on your pet with the utmost precision :)

Useful Numbers

Total Experience Required (1 -> 37) = 154,410 points
Experience Gained Until Starved = 8,571 points

Note: The latter assumes the pet is no more than one level higher than you.

Pet XP boosters

There are currently two different pet XP boosters available. Both are Item Mall items.

Pet Experience PotionThe first pet XP booster is called the Pet Experience Potion. It allows your pet to gain twice as much XP for 3 hours. Your pet doesn't gain XP twice as fast, it just gains two XP points every time it normally would have gained one.

This item is non-tradeable, so you must either buy it yourself with AP or have a trusted friend gift one to you.

Platinum Pet Experience PillThe second XP booster is called the Platinum Pet Experience Pill. This one allows your pet to gain three times as much XP for 1 hour. This booster is good for using with pet XP events because they give your pet 2x pet XP, so with this booster on your pet will get 600% pet XP.

This item is tradeable and may be bought from player shops.

sodit the time it takes to lvl a pet 2 Mar 8 2009, 11:15 PM EDT by sodit

I’ve made an excel spread sheet based upon the info in this wiki I’ve taken the established 1 pet xp every 3.5 seconds and extrapolated it across all the levels and I think it would be useful for players who intend to train a pet to a certain level for them to see how long it would approximately take them to obtain a certain lvl especially given the introduction of the stone statues in the tower in egeha were a player can pet lvl almost forever.

i have a table i was going to ad to this post but i couldnt get it to line up and it just looked a mess. but if you would like it id be happy to send it to you

Yarrysuky Total Pet Exp from Lv1 to Lv38 3 Feb 2 2009, 2:08 AM EST by purpleflame

168,962. Sorry, I'm just posting this thread to remind myself how much Exp total I need to get my pet to level 38. It pains me to count every time when I come back to check. Sometimes I need to get a pet to level 37, and I could just subtract the Exp from level 38 to see how much I need. I just thought I'd post this for my own use. =]
