Defensive behavior across monster types.
Mar 11 2008, 9:42 AM EDT | Post edited: Mar 11 2008, 9:42 AM EDT
It is my understanding that:

1) There are three types of monster behavior; passive, defensive and aggressive.

2) Defensive behaviour is limited to same monster type.

When, in Dratan, Desert Spiders were defensive of Red Spiders, i put this down to a bug and changed my behaviour to compensate for it.

I have now repeatedly found, in Merac, Salamander Ruins and Cerebrii to be mutually defensive. Further to this i have found this behavior, in Salamander Ruins, does not extend to Gnoll Lancers.

I would be interested to know of other examples and if this is a fourth behavior type or a bug.

This really isn't a fourth type of behavior, however there are monsters that help similiar type creatures. For example, in Egeha, if you attack a Boucu Demon, and if another Boucu Demon is nearby, it will help its kin. But that's not all that will help a Boucu Demon. Two boss monsters with insane attack power and defense will also come to the demons aid. These are the Skinwalkers and Inkitomi.

Other examples inclue the Death Goddess and the Dark Goddess, the Female and Male Assassin bugs, Koyemsi and little Koyemsi. I'm not sure if this behavior is practiced by the Scorpiomantis and the Little Scorpiomantis.

This type of behavior is defensive, the same as if two Salamander Ruins would attack the same target. It's not a bug, just the way some monsters are programmed. Elder Drakes and Drakes also share this characteristic.

Hope I cleared something up.

Sintoras draws attention, with Bogles, to something that i put down to paranoia on my part; that a Dire Spike Canine will attack from further away, than it would otherwise, when i attack a Spike Canine.

Might it be that a monster engaged acts as an extension of the attacker?

I would also like to suggest a chart be created re this thread. (Boss monsters, due to their inherent danger, and monsters that do not spawn close together, due to lack of utility; excluded.)

To this end, using the above and further findings, i submit:

Lv 22 Dark Goddess defends Death Goddess.
Lv 29 Desert Spider defends Red Spider.
Lv 42 Beast Archer defends Beast Flyer.
Lv 46 Beast Flyer defends Beast Crawler.
Lv 50 Salamander Ruin defends Cerebrii.
Lv 51 Cerebrii defends Salamander Ruin.
Lv 65 Bogle defends Dark Bogle.

Please add to and/or correct as you are able; or improve if you think i'm wrong re drakes & (treants?) say.

Add Orcs to this list. At least Orc Fighters and Orc Warriors are mutually defensive.
I played in Proc with my healer and I could stand in peace in the room where the stairwairs are. Once I attacked one of the Orcs all kinds (not sure about the Axe Orcs) attacked.

I think Myko, you have come across this extended range of attack thing.

However, in the Prokion Shrine, as all monsters are listed as Aggressive, the situation of cross defence does not come up.

If you are still using the shrine; i wonder if you would be able to measure this extended attack effect? {I tried and failed using the jail.}

CORRECTION

The Bogle does NOT defend the Dark Bogle.

Check out the behavior of Wafes (Debirch, Peeler, Revertin, ...). It is very interesting... almost supportive. It would be nice to see this behavior more in other parts of Last Chaos. Do you find this valuable?

After a while fighting Wafes you will know exactly what they will do... and if you kill their Healers they are lost (since the healer wafes wont run away...). So if you want this behaviour in other parts of LC the designers should give the monsters a bit more "intelligence" ;)

Wafes are protective of all other wafes. Boucu demons, skins walkers, and endemic demons arer mutually defensive of each other also. As are sally ruins + cerebrils, beat archers + beast flywers, and many others.
